A South African village is demanding that a bridge be built across a crocodile-infested river to stop children swimming it to get to school.

Students as young as seven have been making the crossing for two months since the community’s boat was stolen.

Two armed robbers who targeted a Sydney bar that was hosting a bikers’ meeting must have “failed robber school”, said the club’s chairman.The men stormed the bar brandishing machetes and wearing balaclavas - unaware that 50 bikers were holding a meeting in an adjoining room.Alerted to the robbery, some of the bikers chased the men as they fled.One was caught after trying to escape through a back door. He was later treated in hospital for minor injuries.

An auction organised by U2 star Bono and artist Damien Hirst has raised $42.5m (£21.6m) towards the global fight against Aids.

Hirst donated seven of his works to the art sale in New York, including a cabinet filled with drugs to treat HIV, which fetched $7.15m (£3.6m).

The auction broke records for 17 artists, including Banksy, whose Keep It Spotless work made $1.8m (£950,300).

A man has been accidentally shot by a rescuer who was trying to free him from the jaws of a crocodile in northern Australia.

The victim, in his late 20s, was attacked by the reptile near a popular tourist spot on the Mary River south-east of Darwin.

He was flown to hospital by helicopter for emergency surgery for bite and bullet wounds.

A South African man has been killed and eaten by lions at a game lodge where he worked 150km (90 miles) west of Johannesburg, police say.

Samuel Boosen, 36, was attacked after entering the enclosure on Tuesday where an estimated nine lions were kept.

“Only his spine and skull remained,” police spokesman Lesego Metsi told the South Africa Press Association

A kangaroo met an unlikely death after it bounded into the surf in southern Australia and was mauled by a shark, according to eyewitnesses.

Daniel Hurst, who says he saw the incident while out walking his dogs, was accused of being drunk or on drugs after he told the story to friends.

But the emergence of a second witness and the discovery of mangled kangaroo remains appear to confirm his story.

The biggest auction yet of original works by graffiti artist Banksy has exceeded its estimated takings.
The 10 pieces and a print were expected to raise a maximum of £300,000 in total when they were sold in London at auction house Bonhams.

However, the works actually fetched £546,000 altogether.

BBC: Doctors save man with vodka drip

Australian doctors have kept an Italian tourist alive by feeding him vodka through a drip for three days, medical staff in Queensland say.

The 24-year-old man, who had swallowed a poison in an apparent suicide attempt, was treated while in a coma.

Doctors set up the drip after running out of medicinal alcohol, used as an antidote to the poison.

Medical staff said the patient had made a full recovery, and the hangover had worn off by the time he woke up.

Space Girl and Bird, which sold for 20 times its estimate, was commissioned by Blur for their Think Tank album cover.

It was sold to a telephone bidder from the US. Earlier, a Banksy self-portrait showing an ape’s face fetched £198,000 - five times its estimated value

Graffiti artist Banksy has returned to his home town and left his mark on a Bristol building with a stencil design.
The painting, on the side of a building near Park Street, depicts a naked lover caught with his pants down, hanging from a window ledge.

The city council, whose offices overlook the artwork, said it will ask the public whether or not to clean off the mural or paint over it.
