Japan

Last Monday we returned from our weeklong holiday in Japan visiting Sare, Lizzo and Popey. It was an amazing experience! I have always wanted to see Japan and despite my high expectations I was still blow away. It was so incredibly beautiful and the people so friendly and helpful. The only shame was that our visit was all too short Perhaps one day we might get to return.

You will notice I have migrated all our photos to Picasa Web Albums. After trying various other services over the years Picasa seems to be the best option. You might want to spend some time having a look though so of the old photos. There’s a few you may not have seen before. I have also created a new Wombok Festival album that complies photos I have gathered for many people of the last year. Also there’s a new album that a bit of fun called “The early years”.

Some big celebrations this month. Sharon celebrated her 30th birthday in fancy dress at a pub in Clerkenwell. The theme was “Durban”, so as you might expect the costumes were quiet varied from cricket and rugby players to indians and plenty of Safari suits. We awarded a prize (Nelson Mandella’s biography) to our German flat mate - Bernd Clauseen, for his very cleaver and creative interpretation of a Durban rickshaw driver!

V Festival

Despite nearing the end of another English Summer it still feel like we are in the middle of it. Not so much the wether but more the constant parties, festivals and carnivals.

We forgot to take our camera to the Notting Hill Carnival last weekend, so unfortunately no photos to show you there. However did remember our camera the previous weekend for V Festival. It was our first “proper” festival, camping in a cow paddock in the Essex countryside for 4 days. We had an amazing time! The camping worked out perfectly and was lot of fun, and the music and bands were brilliant. I think we can look forward to doing it again some time, but I guess not until summer next year.

A German Wedding

Last weekend we travelled to Germany for Marcel & Mirjams wedding. They both live in Hamburg, however their wedding was in the beautiful little village in which they both grew up, called Lemgo. You can find Lemgo on Google maps here.

In fact this wasn’t the first time we had been to Lemgo, click here to see photos of our previous trip there exactly four years ago.

I used to work with Marcel at Shell have remained friends for many years. Marcel is in an Irish Folk/Rock band, you can check out his music here.

Mirjam is also very musical having just completed her music studies at university. So as you might imagine, the wedding was a full of entertainment! There were choirs and soloists performing during the service, then at the reception there was a half a dozen or more separate performances including a jazz band, a rock band, barvian singers, and a beautiful song Mirjam composed and performed for Marcel… aaarrrhhhh.

Suffice to say Sharon and I had a wonderful weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the wedding and meeting all the family and friends on Marcel & Mirjam. There’s a ton of photos and a short video clip of the wedding and our travels around the surrounding area here.

Cans Festival

I’m finally getting around to posting some old photos to our Gallery. This lot is from a month or so ago when Sharon, Joy and I visited the “Cans Festival” located in a tunnel under the now disused Eurostar Terminal at Waterloo. The Festival is basically a “designated stencil area” for street artists to exhibit their work.

As you may have noticed from our previous blog entires, Sharon and I have some appreciation for street art. It’s often illegal and sometimes offensive, however I personally feel that more often than not it brightens up an otherwise dull and gloomy concrete jungle in which we live.

In recent years, partly thanks to the work of Banksy, it has gained increasing acceptance. The Cans Festival is a celebration of this. Some of the artworks are truly remarkable.

It sounds like the setup to a joke: A crocodile walks into a bar…

A saltwater crocodile measuring just two feet long is held by a patron at the Noonamah Tavern.

Drinkers at a watering hole in the Australian outback found themselves toasting a baby saltwater crocodile that wandered up to the pub’s door Sunday.

No one knows how the two-foot long (60 cm) crocodile ended up outside the Noonamah Tavern, located off a dusty highway about 25 miles (40 km) from the Northern Territory capital of Darwin.

But unusual creatures are all in a day’s drinking for the tavern, said bartender Leila Naray.

“We’ve had a lot of horses pop up. We’ve had cane toads, which are yukky,” she said. “We have had a big buffalo come in, wander around. There’s a photo of him with a beer.”

The tavern is also famous for its annual frog-racing competition, a charity event when patrons pack the bar and bet on the best hopper.

But the crocodile was apparently a first.

Rum the remedy for snake bite on penis

A MAN who was bitten on the penis by a deadly snake yesterday told how he used a cold rum can to soothe the pain while he rang his mother to say a final goodbye.

“I thought I was gone,” Cairns carpenter Daryl Zutt said of his now notorious encounter with a brown snake during a roadside toilet stop in remote Far North Queensland.

“I thought, ‘Maybe, this is it. Maybe, I’m gonna cark it’.”
